Why You Should Move Your Business to Birmingham: The UK’s Most Improved City

Blog - Posted on 1st May 2018

Never mind our Michelin star restaurants, our stunning canal network, our fantastic shopping and eclectic bars…if it’s business growth you’re after, Birmingham is the place to be.

Yes, it’s official. Our home turf is the UK’s most improved city.

The most recent Good Growth for Cities report places Birmingham above average for new businesses start-ups. We also have secure jobs, good health, and well-connected transport links.

Our unemployment rates are dropping and there’s a wave of regeneration projects underway.

HSBC is moving a thousand jobs here from London and there’s a rumour that media giants Channel 4 may be opening an office in the city.

Our New Street Railway Station has been revamped, and there’s exciting new developments happening in the Jewellery Quarter. There are also plans to refurbish the city airport.

Needless to say, there’s a lot going on in Birmingham right now.

Here’s why you should consider moving your business to the UK’s most improved city…

Free Public Wi-Fi Everywhere Means You Can Work on the Move

Fancy working outside the office for a day? Choose your coffee shop. Need to check your emails on the morning commute? No problem. Birmingham has always been a city of technology.

And now a report from Insurance2go confirms that we’re the second most well-connected city in the UK behind London. The report confirms that Birmingham has no less than 620 Wi-Fi hotspots across the city.

Businesses and visitors alike enjoy unlimited connectivity thanks to a successful initiative between Birmingham City Council and Virgin Media Business.

Easy Travel to Other Major UK Cities from Birmingham New Street Station

New Street Railway Station is a gateway to other major cities across the UK. There are direct trains to London Euston, Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool and Scotland, making Birmingham a great location for a UK-based company.

The station was built in the 1960s and was refurbished in 2015. It received a £750m investment and created more than 3,000 jobs. It now serves 170,000 passengers every day.

And that’s not all…

By 2027, Birmingham will be at the centre of the new High Speed 2 (HS2) railway. The new initiative will link the city with London, the East Midlands, Leeds, and Manchester.

Central London will only be 49 minutes away.

Phase one of the project began last year and the first planned service will be in 2026.

The Regeneration of the Jewellery Quarter Brings New Business Opportunities

The Jewellery Quarter is famous for producing over 40% of the jewellery made in the UK and has over 1.5 million visitors a year. This historic area has thriving arts, media, technology, and creative communities.

In recent years, the Jewellery Quarter has seen a surge of new businesses in the area. Many of the city’s historic buildings are being refurbished to serve the growing business community.

There are also several new-build projects underway. £110 million Hockley Mills being one along with Newhall Square which is currently undergoing regeneration. The square has already welcomed a new Travelodge hotel and Stay City apart-hotel.

The Jewellery Quarter really has a thriving and developing community.

The World Will be Your Oyster with the Expansion of Birmingham Airport

With plans to expand the city’s airport, your international clients will only be a plane journey away.

Birmingham airport is currently the seventh busiest in the UK and plans to expand could see the construction of a second runway. The development will create thousands of jobs and serve 55 million passengers by 2050 – double its current capacity.

There are also plans to increase the number of international flight destinations, with LAX at the top of the list.

The Commonwealth Games Are Being Hosted Here in 2022

If you still aren’t convinced that Birmingham is the perfect location for your business, consider this…

Our city beat Liverpool in England’s bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. We fought off stiff competition from hundreds of cities in the Commonwealth to win the selection.

Birmingham won the bid by impressing the board with its existing sporting facilities and thriving business community.

Many major companies already recognise Birmingham as a city for thriving businesses. We are a hub for technology and creativity.

There’s also a lot of new developments underway that offer ambitious businesses a great opportunity to grow.

Birmingham has the perfect combination of connectivity and opportunity.

There’s never been a better time to be in business in the Brum.
